News from Turin - A big WELL DONE to
our scullers in Italy. Aaron, our novice sculler entered the
Masters Vet A category (27 - 35 yrs) and came a very credible 12th out
of 20 with a time of 48' 39 secs. James - Masters Vet C category
(43 -49 yrs) with a time of 46' 45 secs a very credible 6th - especially
when only 45 seconds covered 3rd to 6th places over 11 000 metres.
The next GBR entry in that category was way down in 25th and well over 3
minutes behind James - boo hoo Donal ;) Last to get a mention but
by no means last in her class, a big HURRAH for Sarah WINNER of her
category of women's Vet A in 51'48 secs, 30 seconds ahead of second
place and 21/2 mins over 3rd. Hurray for
you!
It's been a bit quiet on the web
site - sorry about that, but there's been plenty going on down at the
club.
-
learn to row -
the current course has 11 rowing students, from the university as
well as locals. All going well, just a couple more weeks to
go. Thanks to Archie and the Junior girls for all your help so
far :)
-
Viva Italia -
well, Turin especially - just like to wish GOOD LUCK to James, Sarah
and Aaron who are off to Turin next week for a bit of a paddle - an
11 kilometre scull to be precise. They've been training hard and its
fab that GFRC are providing 3 of the 6 British entries out of a
total of 393 senior scullers at this fabulous endurance event.
Last year's men's winner was some chap called Drysdale, with some
chick who was a finalist in bejiing (Mirka Knapkova FYI)
winning the women's event! Go Greenbank!!!

Autumn (?!) training camp - 16yo + 12
December 2009 at Castledore Rowing Club, Fowey. No charge
except to get ourselves and our boats there. ANYONE INTERESTED
PLEASE LET IAN KNOW ASAP - this is a great opportunity for some pukka coaching / videoing / feedback, with time to get out of those
bad habits ready to make those other crews EAT OUR BUBBLES -
sorry, finding nemo ref... :O)
-
HEAD RACES - totnes mini head is on 28
November - if you want to do well, anything at all at this race, let
Ian know and he'll try and put some crews together - let him know
the sooner the better please! Thanks. There are some other
head race dates up on the calendar so keep these in mind and if
there is anything you want to do let ian know asap.
-
Dinner and Dance - 2009 was our 60th
anniversary - we weren't able to have the dinner on the date
originally planned (sorry Mary) as the Chairman, Secretary and
Captain all have something on! So, we'll look back
nostalgically on 13 February 2010 at what a lovely year it was, as
well as look forward to another super season! Black and gold
theme (of course), more info to follow - be lovely to see lots of
rowers (old and new) and their friends and families!
-
FORUM - just a
reminder that we've got a forum (link at the bottom of this page),
as well as an unofficial facebook page :) Please use the forum
to keeping in touch with what is going on, make training
arrangements, share lifts etc. as well as keep an eye on these news
pages and the calendar.

2 races left for
GFRC MSC 4+ but unfortunately not enough points on offer to enable a
win of the champs, but our guys are keen to represent WEARA at the
south coast at folkstone, we'll just have to see if that works
out...
-
In case you're
not sufficiently raced out by the end of the season, Exmouth are
hosting an 8k offshore race for anyone daft enough - poster is on
the calendar - if you're even slightly interested let Ian know asap
so we can sort out boats transport etc. Sounds like a wet and
wild ride!
-
A number of
events for the ARA West Region can be found here including
coaching and coxing courses, junior and senior training camps - if
there's anything you'd like to do let the captain know asap.
Likewise for the
GB Rowing Technique Workship
-
Committee
Meeting this Tuesday 11th at the Lake - for information / agenda
etc. contact Sarah via the contact pages or email.

WEARA looking to
Greenbank to represent the WSA 4+ in the championship events at
Folkstone - anyone interested please contact Ian as soon as
possible. Possible we could suggest a composite WEARA crew.... Also looking for a men's veteran crew - must be 40+
on the day, invitation event. UPDATE 17th - unfortunately
we're not able to field an acceptable crew for WSA 4+ i.e. where all
rowers have entered at least 3 regattas at that event. The MSC
4+ have expressed interest so we're just waiting to see..
-
A close contest
for the MSC 4+ - mid season Exeter 20 points, Greenbank 16 (6 pts
for 1st, 2 for 2nd). All to play for for those West of England
Champs medals and trophy, and representing the club at the South
Coast Champs in Folkstone! Keep up the good work :)

Thanks to
everyone for making Sunday at Totnes a lovely day out on the water.
news of how everyone got on is here -
REPORT - Exeter is next on 11 July, with Wimbleball the week
after which will see the first race outing for our J16 4x ....
let 'em have it girls ;)

Coming up -
Plymouth Regatta this Sunday - Plymouth 2009 report here; Totnes entries
looking really good so far; Exeter entries must be in by 27th so if
you fancy 400m sprints then give Ian a shout!
-
News of James'
trip up to the Nat Vets awaited - a long old drive, and it goes to
show you never know where the black and gold of greenbank will show
up... UPDATE Despite scoring the fastest time of the day in
his class in his heats, James was sadly beaten into second place in
the final. A bit of a disappointment, compounded by his trusty
vehicle conking out on the way home but with a bit of Cornish
fixitall - gaffa tape, some wellies and a blow torch, he was soon
back on the road!!
-
Sunday 14th was
the start of the racing calendar - GFRC Ridiculous Regatta - yes you
can do egg and spoon races whilst sculling, and doubling whilst
blindfolded, with a cox, rounding a buoy, wearing a wig!! An hour or
two of silliness was much appreciated - especially with jelly babies
and heroes and bucks fizz - what's not to enjoy - thanks to Sallie!!!
-
The entries are
in for the first race of the season - Plymouth on 20th. Great
support for this event with 14 rowers intending to compete in 12
events! Great to see some new faces on the racing circuit as
well as a few dodgy old ones - go for it Vet A 4+!!! Totnes is
the following weekend and will hopefully see the first race for our
J16 crew in their lovely new quad, lets hope there's lots of black
and gold there to support them all! If you want to row at
Totnes, closing date is next weekend so give Ian a call.

A great bank
holiday weekend, with smiles all around both in Cornwall on the race
from Truro to Mylor and great results for James and Sarah, with some
lovely silverware brought home from Monmouth and 10 huge smiles from
Mylor - yup the coxes were smiling too. Photos to follow soon!
-
James and Sarah
are off to Monmouth sculling this bank holiday weekend - good luck
to you! The novice men and 3 J16 ladies plus one interloper
are gearing up for the truro river race on Sunday in coastal fours.
good luck to you too - what fab weather for it!
-
Despite being
all geared up and ready to go to Bideford for the head race, the
novice men and junior ladies quad will have to wait for their racing
debut. Bideford have had to cancel the race due to
insufficient entries, which is very sad indeed, especially as Exeter
had to do the same for their headrace scheduled in February.
We hope this isn't a sign of waning interest in the West of England
circuit - we need to do all we can to support our local racing,
especially as it is such a good circuit for juniors and seniors
alike to get into racing. Watch this space as we go into the
summer season with Plymouth the first fixture on 20th June. If
you fancy going, entries close on 6th June, so let the captain know
what you'd like to do.

Learn to Row -
following more enquiries about the learn to row course, the date for the
start of the next 5 week learn to row course has been set for Sunday 3rd
May. Contact the Captain if you'd like to register. More
details on this course can be found here.
-
We're enjoying a
surge of interest at the moment, with participants from our first
learn to row course now student members of the club and training
hard. Well done chaps! Also, lots of new enquiries via the
website, so hopefully there'll be some more new members.

The club was sorry to hear that Bob
Board, WEARA Secretary, has suffered a heart attack. Our thoughts
go out to him and his family and wish him a speedy recovery.
-
Exeter Head was
cancelled due to insufficient interest. A shame but the wintry
conditions probably put off quite a few people.
